Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Situated in central Florida, Highlands Hammock State Park offers a unique glimpse into the state's diverse ecosystems. Established in 1931, it is one of Florida's earliest state parks. The park spans over 9,000 acres and is renowned for its old-growth hardwood forest, swamps, and hydric hammocks. This area is a haven for a wide variety of plant and animal species, making it an excellent site for birdwatchers and naturalists. Among its preserves are ancient oaks, some of which are hundreds of years old. Recreational opportunities abound, including hiking, cycling, and wildlife observation.
