Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

Vast Prairie Views at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park sits in the Okeechobee region of Florida, offering one of the largest remaining expanses of dry prairie in the state. This destination stands apart for its wide-open grasslands that stretch nearly endlessly, providing unique 360-degree horizon views rare in Florida’s usually forested or developed landscapes. Visitors come here not only to witness these expansive vistas but also to see an ecosystem that supports the endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, a species found almost nowhere else.

The park’s landscape is a mix of dry prairie, wet prairie, and oak hammocks, creating varied habitats for a diverse array of wildlife. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and occasionally bobcats make appearances along its trails. Seasonal wildflowers bring vibrant bursts of color across the grasslands in spring and fall, while several birdwatching opportunities delight enthusiasts with sightings of rare species.

Kissimmee Prairie is internationally recognized as a Dark Sky Park, making it a prized spot for stargazing. With minimal light pollution, the milky way and constellations appear spectacularly clear above the open horizon. The park supports on-site camping options including special astronomy pads designed for night sky viewing, enhancing this exclusive experience.

Established to protect this rare ecosystem and its species, the park offers visitors a glimpse of historic Florida landscapes largely erased by development elsewhere. Friendly rangers and biologists provide insights into the delicate balance of the prairie environment and its preservation efforts. Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park remains a peaceful retreat offering both ecological significance and scenic beauty that few places in Florida can match.
