Natural Escape at Highlands Hammock State Park, Sebring, FL
Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, Florida, stands out as a rare natural jewel in the central Florida landscape. Established in 1931 as one of the state’s first parks, it conserves a unique mix of ancient hardwood hammocks, towering old-growth oaks, and vibrant cypress swamps rarely seen in the Sunshine State’s developed areas. This park offers visitors a chance to experience an authentic slice of Florida’s wilderness, known for its lush greenery, diverse wildlife, and tranquil atmosphere.
Walking or biking along the park’s well-marked trails leads through shaded forests filled with giant live oaks draped with Spanish moss, dense ferns, and massive bald cypress trees rising from swampy wetlands. One of the park’s distinctive highlights is the cypress swamp boardwalk that provides an up-close view of this fascinating ecosystem—home to alligators, bobcats, wild hogs, and a variety of bird species. The combination of peaceful forest paths and swamp habitats creates a varied landscape appreciated by nature lovers and photographers alike.
Visitors can also find historical interest here. The park features remnants from the Civilian Conservation Corps campsites from the 1930s, reflecting Florida’s efforts in conservation and public recreation during the Great Depression era.
