About Shannon Callows

Shannon Callows is a vast floodplain ecosystem along the River Shannon in Ireland, renowned for its seasonal flooding, rich biodiversity, and exceptional birdwatching opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Shannon Callows comprises an extensive network of seasonal river floodplains stretching along the middle reaches of the River Shannon in the midwest of Ireland, mainly within counties Offaly, Longford, Roscommon, and Leitrim. The Callows are characterized by low-lying grassland that floods annually during the winter and early spring months, creating a unique wetland habitat supporting diverse flora and fauna. These floodplains feature fertile soils that have been traditionally used for hay production in summer after flooding recedes, sustaining a mosaic of water meadows, marshes, and grasslands. The Shannon Callows are internationally significant for birdlife, hosting important populations of wintering and breeding waders such as Black-tailed Godwit, Lapwing, Curlew, and Snipe, as well as waterfowl including Greenland White-fronted Geese and Whooper Swans. The area is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the EU Natura 2000 network, reflecting its ecological importance. Recreational opportunities in Shannon Callows include birdwatching, nature photography, walking along quiet rural lanes, fishing in the adjacent River Shannon and tributaries, and cultural exploration of traditional farming practices still carried out in the region. Visitors are drawn to the serenity of the landscape, rich wildlife spectacles especially during migration seasons, and the chance to experience one of Ireland’s last great natural floodplain habitats. Local villages offer a glimpse into traditional Irish rural life, further enhancing the visitor appeal of the Shannon Callows.
