8 hours
The west is full of cliffs, valleys, forests, mountains, waterfalls, and cows!
The morning is usually spent exploring the southwestern coastline around the areas of Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol.
After coffee, we start "climbing" up the old roads and dirt paths to one of the west tour's main attraction, the plateau, Paul Da Serra.
If the weather is good we will spend a fair amount of time up here taking in the unbelievable views from above the volcanic valleys, formed during the 3rd phase of eruptions that created Madeira island.
For lunch, we stop at the Aqua Natura Hotel which is simply the best place in Porto Moniz for lunch (optional extra, not included in price and highly recommended).
After lunch we make our way back to Funchal via the beautiful North Western coastal roads, stopping at various attractions along the way including waterfalls, local bars, volcanic sand beaches and lagoons for swimming in (weather permitting)
This trip is highly improvised because of the dramatic nature of the terrain and climate, making it a real adventure every time!
Great for families, nature lovers and those who like being away from the crowds.
The Paul Da Serra plateau experiences rapid weather changes; layers help you stay comfortable.
Uneven terrain off-road requires shoes with good grip for any brief hikes or stops.
On warmer days, spontaneous dips in volcanic sand beaches or lagoons are common, so be ready.
Dynamic landscapes and shifting light create excellent photo opportunities throughout the day.
Madeira’s volcanic landscape formed over multiple eruptive phases; Paul Da Serra plateau reflects its third volcanic phase and ancient erosion patterns.
Locals and guides emphasize the importance of respecting native laurel forests and minimizing impact on sensitive coastal ecosystems during tours.
Adjust to the plateau’s swift weather changes and varying coastal climates.
