About

This walk begins at the majestic Pico do Areeiro, the third-highest peak in Madeira, at an elevation of approximately 1818 meters, and takes you through some of the island’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Along this unforgettable trail, you will be treated to panoramic views that stretch across the Atlantic and reveal the dramatic beauty of Madeira's rugged terrain.

After soaking in the views from Pico do Areeiro, the route leads to the stunning Miradouro do Ninho da Manta, a viewpoint that offers spectacular sights over the island's central mountain range. As you continue, you will reach the Pedra Rija viewpoint, where the hike becomes more challenging but equally rewarding.

Here, the famous "Stairway to Heaven" awaits—a steep, exhilarating climb that pushes your limits while offering awe-inspiring vistas from the summit. This part of the trail is perfect for those looking for a physical and scenic adventure.

Once you’ve conquered the "Stairway to Heaven," the trail leads back toward Pico do Areeiro, where it connects with the PR3 Vereda do Burro trail. A peaceful detour will take you to Poço da Neve, from which you’ll enjoy incredible views over Funchal harbor and the island’s capital.

The hike then continues along the PR3 trail through lush vegetation towards the north of the Ecological Park of Funchal, where you can marvel at Madeira’s diverse landscapes.
