You step onto the wooden deck with the river already loosening the day’s edges. The current is an easy shoulder — it moves, never rushes — and the batteau rocks like a story waiting to be told. Overhead, the sky loosens into the kind of color that makes photographers unzip their bags. On this stretch of the middle James River, the soundscape is a soft algebra: paddle meets water, guitar strings thread into the trees, and laughter pulses from the neighboring boat. This is the Sunset Cruise, a two-hour float out of Scottsville that keeps its feet in history even as it hands you a chilled glass and a board of cured meats.
