Neskowin Ghost Forest

Haunting Shoreline Wonder: Neskowin Ghost Forest

Neskowin Ghost Forest, located on the Oregon Coast near the town of Neskowin, offers a rare glimpse into a dramatic slice of natural history. This unique landmark features the stumps of ancient Sitka spruce trees that once thrived here over 2,000 years ago before a sudden geological event—likely a massive earthquake and subsidence—caused the forest to collapse and become submerged. Over time, the wood was preserved beneath sand and ocean waters, only to reappear now and then as tides shift along the beach.

The ghost forest’s weathered stumps rise from the sandy coastline, often covered with barnacles and marine growth, contrasting sharply with the scenic backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby Proposal Rock, a striking sea stack covered in forest. The stumps’ emergence depends entirely on tidal conditions, making it an ephemeral sight mostly visible during very low tides or spring tides. Visitors are often fascinated by this blend of coastal geology and ancient ecology, providing a rare and evocative experience unlike most Oregon beach scenes.

Neskowin Ghost Forest stands out for its combination of quiet natural beauty and geological intrigue, drawing photographers, history buffs, and beach walkers alike. The forest acts as a reminder of the region’s dynamic landscape shaped by seismic forces, ocean tides, and time. While the short trek to the stumps includes wading across a shallow creek, the payoff is a hauntingly beautiful reminder of nature’s power and the passage of eras visible right at the shoreline.
