Discover Jay Cooke State Park

Scenic Splendor at Jay Cooke State Park, Carlton, MN

Jay Cooke State Park, located near Carlton in northeastern Minnesota, offers a striking combination of rugged wilderness and captivating river landscapes. This sprawling park covers over 9,000 acres and is centered around the thrilling St. Louis River Gorge, where furious rapids race through steep, sculpted rock walls. What makes this park exceptional for the region is its dramatic geology—layers of ancient slate and greywacke rock create jagged cliffs and narrow river gorges, a rare sight in Minnesota’s typically gentle terrain. Visitors are drawn to the park’s iconic Swinging Bridge, an impressive suspension footbridge rebuilt to reflect its original Civilian Conservation Corps design after severe flood damage in 2012. Crossing this bridge offers sweeping views of the whitewater below and the diverse forested landscape beyond.

Jay Cooke State Park is rich in wildlife, with frequent sightings of white-tailed deer, foxes, and numerous bird species adding to the natural charm. Its hiking trails vary from easy walks near the visitor center to challenging routes along the Superior Hiking Trail that follow the river’s twists and turns. Established in 1915, the park honors financier Jay Cooke, whose railroad work opened northern Minnesota for logging and mining, making it a place full of both natural beauty and historical significance.

With clean, accessible restrooms, well-marked paths, and a friendly visitor center offering helpful information, this park provides an engaging outdoor experience for families, solo adventurers, and nature lovers alike.
