Andrews Bald

Andrews Bald: Mountain Meadow in Western North Carolina

Andrews Bald, located in the Great Smoky Mountains near Cherokee, North Carolina, offers visitors a remarkable high-altitude meadow experience unique within the region. Positioned at nearly 6,000 feet elevation, this grassy bald stands out because of its open expanses surrounded by dense spruce-fir forests that are rare in the southern Appalachians. Unlike much of the surrounding rugged, forested landscape, Andrews Bald presents sweeping views across the Smoky Mountains, including glimpses of nearby Fontana Lake and an endless series of mountain ridges.

This site is well known for its vibrant wildflower displays during early summer, attracting photographers, botanists, and outdoor lovers seeking color-filled landscapes beyond typical mountain scenery. The bald is named after Andres Thompson, an early settler in the area, which adds a layer of cultural history to the natural setting. Visitors appreciate the calm and panoramic outlooks that make Andrews Bald one of the few open spaces at this elevation in the park.

On clear days, the broad 180-degree view offers outstanding photo opportunities, particularly as light shifts across the valleys and peaks. The mix of grassy meadows and rare northern tree species like red spruce and Fraser fir creates a distinctive ecological zone that contrasts with lower elevations’ hardwood forests. This blend provides habitat for wildlife, including deer and native bird species, enriching the visitor experience.

Andrews Bald’s gentle but sometimes rugged trails provide a peaceful retreat for those willing to hike moderately challenging paths. The spot encourages visitors to enjoy a picnic, watch wildlife, or simply absorb the quiet majesty of the Smokies without the crowds found at other popular points. It’s a memorable place for anyone wanting a unique perspective on the Appalachian highlands.
