About Kelif Sanctuary

Kelif Sanctuary is located in the northeastern part of Turkmenistan, close to the border with Uzbekistan. Spanning an arid, desert landscape, it serves as a vital refuge for desert-adapted species and supports fragile ecosystems typical of the Central Asian deserts. Established primarily to protect rare and endangered desert mammals, birds, and endemic plants, Kelif Sanctuary is a critical conservation area within the larger Bathyz Nature Reserve complex. The sanctuary's geography includes sandy plains, low dunes, and sparse shrublands dominated by species such as saxaul and wormwood. Notable fauna include the goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa), the desert monitor lizard, and various migratory and resident bird species adapted to harsh desert conditions. Historically, the area has been protected since Soviet times and remains an essential site for biodiversity research and conservation efforts in Turkmenistan. Recreational access is limited and primarily geared toward scientific visitors and conservationists, with opportunities for wildlife viewing and ecological study rather than traditional tourist activities. The remote location and extreme climate conditions make visits demanding, yet rewarding for those interested in desert ecosystems and Central Asian biodiversity. Kelif Sanctuary's importance extends beyond its borders, representing a key node in regional efforts to preserve Central Asia's unique desert habitats and the species they harbor.
