Lost Creek Wilderness Area

The Lost Creek Wilderness Area, located within the Pike National Forest in central Colorado, spans roughly 121,000 acres of protected wilderness characterized by unique granite rock formations, mesas, and dense pine and fir forests. The landscape is marked by rugged mesas, rock spires, and rounded granite domes, offering striking geological features uncommon in the Rockies. This wilderness was designated in 1980 to preserve its natural state and provide high-quality backcountry experiences. Its elevation ranges from about 7,800 to over 11,300 feet, creating diverse habitats that support mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, and numerous bird species including goshawks. The area is intersected by Lost Creek, which runs clear and swift, contributing to the watershed and supporting riparian life. Popular recreation includes hiking on well-maintained trails such as the Goose Creek Trail and Little Scraggy Trail, rock climbing on granite formations, horseback riding, and backcountry camping. The wilderness is known for its solitude and offers scenic overlooks with expansive views, especially from Mount Richthofen. Visitors are drawn to its peaceful backcountry experience, excellent opportunities for photography, especially around the dramatic rock outcrops, and the chance to explore extensive trail networks away from heavy crowds. Access is commonly via trailheads located north and south of the wilderness. Its preservation is critical for maintaining local ecosystems and protecting the water quality of Lost Creek.
