About Saint Mary's Wilderness

Saint Mary's Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area located in the southwest region of Virginia, within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Covering approximately 8,280 acres, this wilderness is characterized by steep ridges, narrow valleys, and numerous creeks including Little Saint Mary's and Saint Mary's Rivers that feed into the larger New River watershed. The area is predominantly covered by mixed hardwood forests with rich understory vegetation that supports diverse wildlife such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and various bird species. Historically, the land was impacted by charcoal production and logging in the early 20th century, but it has since recovered and remains undeveloped to preserve its natural condition. Saint Mary's Wilderness offers a remote experience with a network of rugged trails, including the popular Saint Mary's Trail and Little Saint Mary's Trail, that challenge hikers with steep climbs and rewarding views at rocky overlooks. The wilderness features cascading waterfalls and stream crossings, making water-focused exploration a highlight. Popular recreational activities include backpacking, day hiking, fishing in the clear mountain streams, and wildlife observation. Due to its wilderness designation, mechanized travel and mountain biking are prohibited to protect the habitat. Its quiet and relatively low visitor numbers attract those seeking a backcountry experience away from more heavily trafficked state and national parks in Virginia. Visitors should be prepared for primitive conditions and limited cell service. The wilderness lies near the town of Pearisburg, providing some amenities and access points. Saint Mary's Wilderness is favored for solitude, rugged terrain, and the varied forest ecosystem it protects within the Appalachian Mountains.
