Established in 1929, Zaqatala State Reserve encompasses a unique blend of temperate broadleaf and mixed forests situated in the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Covering a rugged terrain characterized by steep slopes, river valleys, and dense woodlands, the reserve serves as a sanctuary for numerous rare and endangered species, including the East Caucasian tur, brown bear, and lynx. The vegetation includes lush hornbeam, beech, oak, and chestnut trees, contributing to a rich biodiversity hotspot. Historically, the reserve was created to protect indigenous forest species and wildlife from increasing human exploitation. The reserve also provides habitat for over 270 bird species, making it a favored destination for bird watchers. While campgrounds and visitor infrastructure are limited, the area’s pristine environment appeals to adventurers seeking less-developed natural spaces.
