About Talysh Mountains State Reserve

The Talysh Mountains State Reserve, established in 1996, spans the southeastern part of Azerbaijan, encompassing a significant portion of the southern Talysh mountain range bordering Iran and the Caspian Sea coastline. Characterized by its lush temperate rainforests, the reserve hosts a remarkable assemblage of flora and fauna, including many endemic and relict species that reflect the area's status as a biodiversity hotspot. The geography is dominated by steep ridges, deep valleys, and a temperate humid climate that fosters dense broadleaf forests, predominantly consisting of beech, hornbeam, oak, and chestnut trees. This reserve plays a crucial ecological role in preserving rare and endangered species such as the Persian leopard, Caucasian black grouse, and various orchids. Historically, the region was less disturbed due to its rugged terrain, allowing the natural habitat to remain largely intact. Visitors to the Talysh Mountains State Reserve are drawn to its pristine natural beauty and the opportunity for immersive wildlife viewing, hiking through ancient forests, and studying the complex ecosystems typical of the Colchic forests. Though infrastructure is limited, the reserve offers a true wilderness experience where visitors can explore remote trails, discover waterfalls and mountain streams, and engage in birdwatching for some of the Caucasus region’s rarer avian species. The reserve is an essential site for conservationists and nature lovers interested in the ecology of the Caucasus and Talysh mountain landscapes. Adequate preparation and local guidance are advised for exploration given the remote character of the area.
