About Shenandoah River State Park

Shenandoah River State Park

Located in Warren County, Virginia, Shenandoah River State Park spans riverfront landscapes along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. The park is approximately 1,600 acres of protected land rich in forested hills, river floodplains, and open meadows. This variety of habitats supports abundant wildlife including deer, river otters, beavers, and many bird species such as bald eagles and great blue herons. Established in 1994, the park preserves a natural corridor along the Shenandoah River that provides outstanding recreation opportunities for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and picnicking. There are several miles of multi-use trails that wind through hardwood forests and river views, connecting to river access points and quiet picnic sites. The river itself is popular for angling, especially for smallmouth bass and catfish, as well as for paddling trips suited to all skill levels. The park’s relatively gentle terrain makes it family-friendly while still offering scenic vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Shenandoah River State Park protects a section of the river known for its calm waters and ecological significance within the Shenandoah Valley region. Visitors enjoy seasonal wildflower displays, rich fall foliage, and opportunities for spotting migratory birds. The park is managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and serves as a peaceful natural getaway within easy reach of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
