About Old Tunnel State Park

Old Tunnel State Park

Old Tunnel State Park is located northwest of Fredericksburg in Gillespie County, Texas. The park centers on an abandoned railroad tunnel originally constructed in 1888 as part of the Kerrville-Fredericksburg rail line. The tunnel ceased operation in 1942 and eventually became a critical habitat for Mexican free-tailed bats, one of the largest bat colonies in the state. Each year, hundreds of thousands of bats roost in the tunnel during the summer, creating an extraordinary natural spectacle during their nightly emergence at dusk. The surrounding Hill Country landscape features typical Central Texas terrain, including rocky outcrops, live oak woodlands, and juniper brush. Visitors can explore several short trails that provide excellent vantage points for observing the bats as they exit the tunnel. The park also offers interpretive displays recounting the history of the railroad and the importance of bats in the local ecosystem. Besides bat watching, Old Tunnel State Park is popular with photographers, bird watchers, and those seeking a quiet nature experience. Its relatively small size and proximity to Fredericksburg make it an accessible destination for families and day visitors. The park emphasizes wildlife conservation and education, making it a valuable site for ecological awareness and outdoor recreation in the Texas Hill Country.
