About Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park

Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park spans over 18,000 acres along the lower reaches of the Wekiva River in central Florida, north of Orlando. The preserve conserves important floodplain forests, cypress swamps, hardwood hammocks, and pine flatwoods that support a diverse array of wildlife, including black bears, river otters, great blue herons, and rare wading birds. The park is a critical component of the Wekiva River system, which is one of Florida’s designated Outstanding Florida Waters and protected under the state’s Wild and Scenic Rivers program. Historically, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes and later saw agricultural development before conservation efforts led to the establishment of the preserve. Visitors can explore more than 15 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as several canoe and kayak launch sites along the Wekiva River and surrounding creeks. The park’s relatively remote character provides a quiet experience for birding, photography, and nature study. Camping is available at developed campgrounds featuring amenities suited for tents and RVs, enhancing overnight visits. Wildlife viewing opportunities are strong throughout the year, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon. Lower Wekiva River Preserve’s landscape changes with the seasons, from lush green spring growth to colorful fall foliage, making it a rewarding destination for seasonal visitors. The preserve is managed by Florida State Parks and is part of a larger network of protected lands conserving Florida’s natural water resources and biodiversity.
