About Castlewood State Park

Located in St. Louis County, Missouri, Castlewood State Park spans over 1,800 acres along the Meramec River. The park features steep sandstone bluffs, wooded hills, and river access points that attract visitors for a variety of outdoor activities. The park's diverse landscape supports oak-hickory forests, mixed woodlands, and riparian habitats that provide shelter for deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. Historically, the land was used for agriculture and later developed into a recreational area, officially established as a state park in 1974. Castlewood is especially recognized for its rugged terrain, which challenges mountain bikers and hikers alike on more than 25 miles of multi-use trails. The park also offers fishing opportunities in the Meramec River, as well as seasonal swimming at favored river spots. Landmarks include the high bluffs overlooking the river, scenic overlooks such as Round Mountain, and remnants of old rock quarries. Its proximity to the St. Louis metropolitan area makes it one of the more accessible natural getaway locations in eastern Missouri. The park provides an engaging outdoor experience with well-marked trails, picnic areas, and ample opportunities for wildlife viewing. The blend of river, forest, and bluff landscapes contributes to its appeal for both casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure near the city.
