About Qechresh State Nature Reserve

Qechresh State Nature Reserve is situated in the mountainous region of northern Iraq's Kurdistan Region, spreading across diverse terrain including dense forests, alpine meadows, and rugged hills. Established to protect the last remnants of the native oak (Quercus) forests and preserve the natural ecology of the area, the reserve is a critical refuge for a variety of plant and animal species. It features mixed forest stands composed primarily of oak, pine, and other native tree species, supporting populations of wildlife such as wild goats, foxes, and numerous bird species including raptors. The reserve has historical significance as it preserves landscapes relatively untouched by urban development, giving visitors a chance to witness the traditional ecosystem and local wildlife in a natural setting. Recreational opportunities include hiking on informal trails, wildlife observation, photography, and botanical study, although amenities and visitor infrastructure remain limited due to ongoing development and conservation challenges. The reserve also plays an important role in local conservation education and research efforts in the Kurdistan Region. Though access is somewhat remote and seasonal, Qechresh State Nature Reserve offers a unique outdoor experience for nature enthusiasts, conservationists, and adventurous travelers eager to explore Iraq’s natural heritage beyond its well-known historical sites.
