About Rum River State Forest

Rum River State Forest is located in central Minnesota, spanning parts of Kanabec and Mille Lacs counties along the scenic Rum River. Established as a state forest to protect the river corridor and surrounding landscapes, this forest covers a varied terrain of rolling hills, mixed hardwoods, pine stands, wetlands, and the meandering Rum River itself. The forest's ecology supports a mix of oak, maple, birch, and white pine, providing habitat for wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, beavers, and numerous bird species. Historically, the area was important to the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples and later played a role in regional logging operations. Today, the forest is prized for its recreational opportunities, including hiking and mountain biking on over 20 miles of trails, canoeing and kayaking on the Rum River, and freshwater fishing for species such as northern pike and bass. The forest also contains several primitive and developed campgrounds, offering visitors a chance to experience the natural setting overnight. As a protected state forest, it balances outdoor recreation with conservation efforts aimed at preserving water quality and forest health. Visitors enjoy peaceful river views, bird watching, and exploring forest ecosystems in all seasons, with winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing adding to its year-round appeal.
