The byway is renowned for its stunning vistas of the Cascade Mountains, including the snow-capped peaks of Mount Bachelor and the Three Sisters. The area is rich in volcanic history, with the byway itself skirting the edge of several stratovolcanoes and passing by lava flows that testify to the region's dynamic geological past. Recreational opportunities abound, with numerous trails leading to alpine lakes such as Sparks Lake, Elk Lake, and Devil’s Lake. Fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are popular activities in the warmer months, while winter brings opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Attractions along the route include the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, where visitors can explore lava tubes and cinder cones, and the vibrant town of Bend, known for its outdoor recreation and lively craft beer scene.
