Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area is located in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern Virginia and encompasses approximately 200,000 acres of forests, wilderness, and mountains. Its centerpiece, Mount Rogers, is the highest point in Virginia at 5,729 feet, offering a cool, high-altitude escape. The area is managed by the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and provides various ecological environments from hardwood forests to open highland meadows (balds). Visitors can explore over 500 miles of trails, including parts of the Appalachian Trail, which is a popular hiking route through the recreation area.
