Grayson Highlands State Park

Scenic Highlands Magic: Grayson Highlands State Park, Virginia

Grayson Highlands State Park, located near the small town of Mouth of Wilson in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, stands out for its striking combination of rugged natural beauty and unique wildlife. Sitting high above surrounding landscapes, this park offers visitors an impressive highland setting filled with open meadows, dense forests, and rocky outcrops. Among its most notable features are the wild ponies, which roam freely across the park’s fields and trails, delighting visitors seeking a rare glimpse of these gentle creatures in their semi-wild habitat. The park’s elevation maintains cooler temperatures year-round, lending to vibrant blooms of mountain laurel and rhododendron, especially spectacular in spring.

Hikers and nature enthusiasts are drawn to this area for its panoramic views from the slopes of Mount Rogers, which rises to the highest peak in Virginia at over 5,700 feet. Trails wind through a variety of ecosystems—ranging from dense hardwood forests to breathtaking rocky balds that offer wide-open skies and distant ridges. These rock formations, typical of the southern Appalachians, add dramatic contrast to the otherwise gentle highland terrain.

Established in 1965, the park preserves a critical part of Virginia’s natural heritage and provides opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping. Its accessible paths and scenic overlooks make it a favorite destination for both day visitors and seasoned backpackers. Facilities such as a well-maintained visitor center and horse camps enhance visitor convenience. Whether caught in the vibrant colors of fall or the fresh bloom of early summer, Grayson Highlands is truly a unique spot that blends Virginia’s wild charm with mountain adventure.
