About Fontana Lake Recreation Area

Fontana Lake Recreation Area

Fontana Lake Recreation Area is a vibrant destination located between North Carolina and Tennessee, surrounded by the enchanting Great Smoky Mountains and Nantahala National Forest. The lake, which spans over 10,230 acres, was created by the impoundment of the Little Tennessee River. This area serves not only as a stunning recreational site but also as a habitat to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Historically, Fontana Lake played a pivotal role during World War II, as the Fontana Dam was constructed to provide hydroelectric power for wartime industry. Today, the lake presents various recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking. Its clear waters and the backdrop of rolling hills and thick forests make it a prime spot for photography and nature appreciation. Notable landmarks include the Fontana Dam itself, which is the tallest dam in the eastern United States, and the Appalachian Trail that crosses it, offering hikers access to some of the most rugged sections of the Smokies.
