About Eklutna Lake Recreation Area

Located approximately 40 miles northeast of Anchorage, Alaska, Eklutna Lake Recreation Area surrounds Eklutna Lake, a deep glacially-fed lake set against the dramatic backdrop of the Chugach Mountains. The area encompasses around 3,200 acres of public land managed primarily by the Alaska State Parks, serving as a vital outdoor escape for locals and visitors alike. The lake itself stretches about 7 miles long and 1 mile wide, offering excellent conditions for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Its crystalline alpine waters are fed by nearby glaciers, providing both scenic beauty and cold-water fishing opportunities, including lake trout and arctic grayling. The diverse terrain around the lake supports boreal forest ecosystems with black spruce, white spruce, and birch, while wildlife species like moose, bears, and bald eagles are commonly seen. Hiking trails vary from short nature walks to challenging routes such as the tail-leading up to the Eklutna Lake Overlook, providing panoramic views of the lake and mountains. The area also features several campgrounds that offer a blend of developed and primitive sites suited for tents and RVs. Historically, Eklutna Lake has been important to the local Dena’ina Athabascan people, and the nearby Eklutna Village reflects this indigenous heritage. Visitors are drawn to the area’s combination of accessible wilderness, recreational diversity, and stunning natural landmarks, making Eklutna Lake Recreation Area a favorite in Southcentral Alaska.
