About Siahkeshim Protected Area

Situated in the Mazandaran Province of northern Iran, Siahkeshim Protected Area is part of the ancient Hyrcanian forest belt stretching along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. This protected region covers a diverse landscape of dense broadleaf forests, steep mountainous terrain, and fast-flowing streams. The area's unique temperate forest ecosystem harbors many endemic and endangered species, including Persian leopards, brown bears, wild boars, and a variety of bird species like the Caucasian black grouse. Historically, the Hyrcanian forests have been vital for traditional livelihoods and cultural heritage, with local communities maintaining sustainable practices. Visitors to Siahkeshim enjoy opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially in early morning or dusk hours, as well as hiking on several informal trails that meander through towering chestnut and beech trees. The region's cooler climate and frequent mist create a mystical ambiance, particularly appealing to photographers and nature enthusiasts. While the area remains relatively undeveloped for tourism, this provides an immersive wilderness experience. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the fragile forest ecosystem from illegal logging, poaching, and habitat fragmentation. Siahkeshim's stunning natural scenery combined with its rich biodiversity makes it a significant destination for ecotourism and scientific research within Iran's network of protected areas.
