About Kennebec Highlands

Kennebec Highlands is the largest contiguous block of conserved land in central Maine, covering approximately 6,500 acres of rugged terrain. This area features a variety of ecosystems, including hardwood and softwood forests, wetlands, and several small ponds. The land is renowned for its biodiversity, providing a habitat for species such as moose, black bears, and a variety of bird species. Historically, these lands were used for timber harvesting and as hunting grounds by local inhabitants. Today, the Highlands are a popular destination for outdoor recreation, offering numerous trails for hiking, mountain biking, and snowshoeing. Notable landmarks include McGaffey Mountain, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and Sanders Hill, known for its lush, forested hiking trails.
