About Sokolitsa Reserve

Sokolitsa Reserve is located in the western Stara Planina (Balkan) Mountains of Bulgaria, near the town of Vratsa. Established in 1981, it encompasses a complex karst terrain characterized by steep cliffs, caves, and deep gorges formed by limestone formations. The reserve's centerpiece is its ancient beech forests — some of the oldest and most well-preserved in the Balkans — which have remained largely untouched due to long-standing conservation efforts. This unique ecosystem supports a wide array of flora and fauna, including various endemic plant species and wildlife such as brown bears, wolves, and numerous bird species notable in the Balkan biodiversity hotspot. Hikers traverse trails threading through the forest and limestone ridges, discovering panoramic views of the Vratsa Balkan Range and nearby landmarks such as the famous Vratsata Gorge. The reserve serves not only as an important site for ecological research and conservation but also as a tranquil getaway for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate wilderness hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography. Due to its protected status, motorized access is limited, helping preserve the reserve’s natural ambiance. With relatively moderate visitor numbers compared to more prominent Bulgarian national parks, Sokolitsa offers a quiet, off-the-beaten-path retreat immersed in biodiversity and geological wonder.
