Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park, established in 1989, encompasses part of the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) around the town of Vratsa. The park covers a diverse landscape marked by towering karst formations, deep river gorges, dense mixed forests, and unique cave systems. Its centerpiece is the dramatic Vratsata Gorge, one of Bulgaria’s deepest and most scenic gorges, famous for rock climbing and panoramic views. The park protects a wide array of flora including Balkan endemic species such as the Cyprus oak and Bulgarian endemic plants, alongside rich fauna like brown bears, wolves, chamois, and over 150 bird species including eagles and falcons.
