About Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park

Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park

Located in the heart of Baja California, Mexico, Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park covers a significant portion of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir mountain range. The park encompasses elevations ranging from approximately 1,000 to over 3,000 meters (3,281 to 9,843 feet), including Picacho del Diablo, the highest peak in Baja California. The geography is characterized by steep canyons, granite cliffs, and high-elevation forests predominantly composed of pine, fir, and oak species. It serves as a crucial habitat for diverse flora and fauna such as the endemic California condor, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and black bears. The park plays an important role in the conservation of these species and the fragile montane ecosystem. Established in 1947 to preserve its unique natural heritage, the park offers visitors a remote wilderness experience with opportunities for hiking, wildlife observation, camping, and stargazing. The presence of the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional complements its appeal, offering some of the clearest night skies in North America due to its high altitude and low light pollution. Visitors are drawn to the challenging trails and scenic vistas, as well as the tranquil environment far from urban centers. Access to the park requires preparation, given its elevation changes and variable weather. Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the solitude, pristine environment, and the chance to experience one of the few remaining intact pine-oak forests in the peninsula.
