About Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park

Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park

Established in 2015, Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park encompasses volcanic mountain ranges spanning Niigata and Nagano Prefectures on Japan’s main island of Honshu. The park features prominent peaks such as Mount Myoko, Mount Hiuchi, Mount Takatsuma, and Mount Togakushi, showcasing dramatic volcanic terrains with craters, lava domes, and alpine ecosystems. Rich in flora and fauna, the park protects mixed forests of conifers and broadleaf species, home to Japanese serow, Asiatic black bears, and diverse birdlife. Historically, the area is renowned for its role in Japanese mountain worship, with Togakushi Shrine reflecting spiritual heritage linked to Shugendo mountain ascetics. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy numerous well-maintained trails leading through forested slopes, alpine meadows, and volcanic landscapes, as well as winter sports opportunities including backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. The park’s hot springs (onsen) provide natural relaxation spots. Key landmarks include Mount Myoko’s volcanic summit, the traditional Togakushi Shrine complex, and scenic overlooks across the volcanic ridge line. The park attracts nature lovers, adventure seekers, and cultural travelers eager to explore its wilderness, recover in natural hot springs, and engage in seasonal outdoor activities.
