About Eungella National Park

Eungella National Park

Eungella National Park, located in Queensland, Australia, is one of the most significant protected areas for subtropical rainforest ecosystems. Covering rugged mountainous terrain on the Clarke Range, the park rises to over 1,200 meters in elevation, offering cooler temperatures than surrounding lowlands. Established in 1941, the park protects thousands of hectares of dense rainforest and fertile river valleys at the heart of the tropical Queensland hinterland. It is famous for being one of the best places to spot the elusive platypus in the wild, especially around Broken River where several viewing platforms allow for calm observation of this native monotreme. Flora includes a diversity of ancient tree species, ferns, and mosses, contributing to the park’s vibrant green canopy and rich biodiversity. Bird life is prolific, including the unique Eungella honeyeater and regent bowerbird. The park also shelters several rare and threatened frog species such as the Eungella dayfrog. Visitors enjoy a range of hiking trails suitable for all levels, from short walks to challenging bushwalks leading to panoramic lookouts like Sky Window and Mount Dalrymple. Eungella’s cooler climate creates a refreshing escape during Queensland’s warm months. Besides hiking and wildlife viewing, picnicking and photography are popular activities. Limited camping is available nearby, with the park mainly oriented toward day visits. Throughout the year, the park's natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere attract tourists, nature enthusiasts, and researchers focused on conservation efforts.
