Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Cloquet River State Forest covers a large section of northeastern Minnesota, adjacent to the Superior National Forest and near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The forest includes a varied landscape of mixed conifer and hardwood stands, wetlands, rivers, and rugged terrain carved primarily by the Cloquet River and its tributaries. Ecologically, it is home to species such as white-tailed deer, black bear, timber wolves, loons, and many migratory birds. The forest has a rich history tied to early logging and indigenous peoples of the region. Today, visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking along miles of trails, backcountry camping, fishing for trout and walleye, and paddling in rivers and lakes. Winter transforms the area into a destination for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Notable landmarks include the scenic Cloquet River Gorge and various wildlife viewing areas. The forest appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and natural beauty, as well as those interested in exploring Minnesota’s boreal ecosystems. Its proximity to several small towns and protected lands adds to its accessibility while maintaining a remote feeling in many areas.
