About Waitukubuli National Trail

Waitukubuli National Trail

The Waitukubuli National Trail spans approximately 115 miles (185 kilometers) from the southernmost tip of Dominica at Scott’s Head to Cabrits National Park in the north. Dominica’s rugged volcanic terrain is characterized by lush rainforests, steep mountain ridges, waterfalls, rivers, and native wildlife, making the trail a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Established in 2013, the trail was designed to connect various communities, cultural sites, and natural landmarks, encouraging ecotourism and sustainable tourism on the island. Hikers move through 14 distinct segments that vary in length and difficulty, passing through diverse ecosystems including tropical rainforests, cloud forests, and river valleys. Along the way, travelers can experience indigenous Kalinago history, visit traditional villages, and encounter endemic species such as the Sisserou parrot, Dominica’s national bird. The trail is maintained by the Waitukubuli National Trail Organisation (WNTO), which promotes safety, conservation, and local involvement. The trail’s volcanic origins are evident in numerous geological features, including the Boiling Lake—the second-largest hot spring in the world—found near one of the trail segments. Waitukubuli offers a mix of challenging climbs, rewarding scenic overlooks, and opportunities to connect with Dominica’s culture and natural heritage, appealing to seasoned hikers, nature photographers, and cultural tourists alike.
