About Tai Lam Country Park

Established in 1979, Tai Lam Country Park covers a vast area of rolling hills, dense woodland, and reservoirs in the western part of Hong Kong’s New Territories. The park is well known for its diverse natural habitats, which include subtropical forests, freshwater ecosystems, and wildlife such as wild boars, macaques, and numerous bird species. The landscape is characterized by a series of mountain ridges with elevations reaching up to 585 meters at Kai Kung Leng, providing excellent vantage points and panoramic views of the surrounding cityscape and coastline. Tai Lam Country Park includes important reservoirs such as Tai Lam Chung Reservoir and the smaller Nam Wan Reservoir, both popular for their scenic waterside trails and picnic spots. Visitors can explore a network of hiking and mountain biking trails that range from easy walks to strenuous climbs, including sections of the MacLehose Trail (Stage 5). In addition to outdoor recreation, the park features historical remnants like old villages and wartime relics. Its proximity to urban centers makes it a favored day-trip destination for nature lovers seeking respite from city life. Facilities such as barbecue sites, designated camping areas, and visitor centers help support a variety of recreational activities. The park’s management ensures the protection of its varied ecosystems while maintaining accessibility. Tai Lam is also recognized for its role in conservation education and outdoor environmental programs, helping visitors connect with Hong Kong’s natural heritage.
