About Golestan Biosphere Reserve
Golestan Biosphere Reserve, established in 1976, is Iran's oldest biosphere reserve and one of the most biologically diverse regions in the country. Located in the steep terrains of the Alborz mountain range in Golestan Province, this reserve encompasses a mosaic of ecosystems including dense Hyrcanian forests, mountainous steppes, and riverine wetlands. The area is a crucial habitat for many endangered and rare species such as the Persian leopard, brown bear, wild goat, and various endemic bird species. With over 90 mammal species and more than 250 bird species, Golestan offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. The reserve features a varied topography with elevations ranging from 1,000 to over 2,300 meters, supporting a mixture of temperate forest, shrubland, and alpine meadows. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking along several marked trails that pass through ancient oak and hornbeam forests, scenic rivers, and mountainous landscapes. Historical significance is also part of the reserve’s appeal, with remnants of ancient settlements and traditional pastoral practices still visible. Visitors are drawn to the area's unspoiled nature, peaceful atmosphere, and chance encounters with wildlife. Golestan plays a critical role in regional environmental conservation efforts and serves as a model for sustainable protection of Iran’s natural heritage. Its combination of rich biodiversity, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural connections makes it an invaluable destination for researchers, ecotourists, and adventurers alike.
