About Anzali Wetland Biosphere Reserve

The Anzali Wetland Biosphere Reserve, located along the southwestern coast of the Caspian Sea in Gilan Province, Iran, is one of the most important and largest wetlands in the Middle East. Spanning over 20,000 hectares, the reserve is characterized by a mosaic of freshwater and brackish water marshes, reed beds, mudflats, and open water bodies that support an extraordinary biodiversity. It serves as a crucial stopover and breeding habitat for a multitude of migratory birds including flamingos, herons, and pelicans, as well as endangered species such as the Caspian seal and Iranian shelduck. The wetland also sustains a rich fish population vital to the local economy and traditional fisheries. Geographically, the wetland is fed by several rivers and bordered by forests and agricultural lands, creating a dynamic ecological interface. Beyond its ecological value, Anzali Wetland is a cultural hub with nearby towns known for their vibrant markets, artisanal crafts, and fresh fish delicacies. Visitors are drawn to the reserve for birdwatching, boating, and photography, with several designated observation points and boat tours that offer intimate encounters with the landscape and wildlife. Conservation efforts have been ongoing to combat threats from pollution, water extraction, and urban development. The reserve’s designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve highlights the balance between sustainable use and environmental protection necessary to preserve this unique ecosystem.
