Waterfall Wonders: Koosah and Sahalie Falls Trail

Waterfall Wonders at Koosah and Sahalie Falls Trail

Koosah and Sahalie Falls Trail, located near the town of Sisters in Oregon’s scenic Cascade Range, offers visitors an unforgettable encounter with the powerful beauty of the McKenzie River. This trail highlights two magnificent waterfalls within a compact area: Sahalie Falls, known for its wide, cascading sheets of water, and Koosah Falls, which drops with robust force into a rocky gorge. These falls are part of the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail, a well-loved route for visitors seeking accessible yet striking river views amid dense forests of Douglas firs, western cedars, and vibrant mosses.

What makes this landmark stand out is the combination of accessibility and natural grandeur. Sahalie Falls is especially easy to view, as the main viewing platform is just steps from a small parking lot, offering wheelchair access and a chance to witness roaring water pouring over basalt ledges. Koosah Falls is slightly more of a hike, with a well-maintained trail that winds through old-growth forests and past quiet creek crossings before reaching multiple vantage points overlooking the falls’ thunderous flow. Along the way, the trail offers spots where visitors can dip their feet into the cool water or simply absorb the calming atmosphere of one of Oregon’s most photogenic river landscapes.

Historically, these falls were significant to Indigenous tribes in the region, who regarded the rivers as vital sources of life and spirituality. Today, the trail remains a favorite for visitors seeking a relatively short hike paired with stunning natural sights.
