Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Majestic Peaks & Glaciers at Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, located in Bayan-Ölgii province in Mongolia’s remote northwest, is a remarkable destination defined by its stunning alpine scenery and unique natural heritage. This vast protected area is famous for the Tavan Bogd mountain group, the tallest peaks in Mongolia, standing proudly above an untouched wilderness of glaciers, rivers, and colorful meadows. The park’s highlight is the Potanin Glacier, Mongolia’s longest glacier, offering dramatic icy vistas against towering cliffs.

Visitors are drawn here for more than just the impressive summits: rare wildlife species such as elusive snow leopards, wild ibex, and golden eagles inhabit this rugged landscape. The area also holds cultural significance, as it lies near the borders of Kazakhstan, China, and Russia, where Kazakh and Tuvan nomadic traditions blend with the natural environment. The park, created in 1996, covers over 630,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, attracting travelers seeking serene natural beauty paired with challenge and adventure.

Besides the breathtaking scenery, visitors often encounter traditional Kazakh eagle hunters, who carry on age-old falconry techniques in this dramatic setting. The contrast between snow-capped peaks and vibrant wildflower-covered valleys provides a vivid and memorable experience throughout the warmer months. Whether from base camps or on expert-guided glacier treks, the experience is both physically rewarding and visually unforgettable.

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park offers a rare chance to connect with Mongolia’s grand mountain landscapes and ancient cultural customs in one of the country’s most spectacular regions.
