Teotitlán del Valle, whose name in Nahuatl means "Land of the Gods," is located in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. This community is renowned for its cultural heritage and the ancient Zapotec weaving tradition. As we walk through its cobblestone streets, you’ll discover colorful adobe houses adorned with intricate textile designs, a reflection of generations of craftsmanship.
Upon arrival, we will take a stroll through the community, visiting key sites such as the Church of San Juan Bautista. Built in the 16th century over an ancient Zapotec temple, it is a clear example of the fusion between indigenous and Spanish cultures. We will also pass by the market, where local products and traditional dishes are offered every morning. Teotitlán is one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the Americas, with over two thousand years of history.
Next, we will visit a candle-making workshop to learn about the process of making traditional beeswax candles, which are essential for local festivities. Later, we will enjoy a delicious Zapotec meal, tasting quesadillas, mole negro, and sopa de guías, while learning about the significance of these dishes in Oaxacan cuisine.
Afterwards, we will participate in a natural dye workshop, where we will see how natural elements are transformed into vibrant colors for Zapotec tapestries.
At the end, we will head to the sacred trail of Cerro Picacho for our sunset ascent. This site is considered a spiritual place for the Zapotecs, associated with rituals and ancestral ceremonies. From the top, we will enjoy panoramic views of the Central Valleys, in a light and color show that will make this experience truly unique.
As we descend the mountain, we will reflect on a day full of history, tradition, and nature, returning to Oaxaca around 8:00 p.m.
