The Avalanche Skills Training 2 + (AST2+) course is your next step in avalanche skills development after completing the AST1 introductory course and getting some mileage under your belt.
To fully enjoy the backcountry, it is necessary to recognize avalanche terrain, understand weather trends and know how to minimize your risks. This AST2+ course helps you gain the precious mileage you need. Field days will have a strong focus on getting students into the lead and making decisions on the move at the front of the group. Our ACMG Guides will introduce a variety of snow stability tests, as well as a more advanced set of snowpack analysis skills and their application, not previously introduced on the AST 1 Programs.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
• Use the Avaluator 2 as a filtering tool to determine when additional planning and travel techniques are required to travel safely. • Be familiar with Avalanche Danger Ratings verification techniques for personal use on a local scale. • Be familiar with the ATES technical model as a means to develop personal, local terrain ratings. • Use route finding to take advantage of nuances in terrain to manage personal risk. • Use travel techniques in avalanche terrain appropriate to the avalanche conditions. • Proficiently carry out a companion rescue. • Understand the limits of their training.
If you are looking to get the most out of an AST 2 course, this is the course for you.
