Squire Boone Caverns is a living cave with rushing streams that carry more than a million gallons of water through the cave and over rarely seen underground waterfalls. In fact, you’ll find the largest rimstone dams accessible to the public in the United States right here!
Stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and more adorn the cavern walls, ceilings and floors in a natural wonder that has taken millions of years to create. You’ll walk about 1/3 of a mile through this living and growing ecosystem deep below the Earth’s surface and learn how its passageways were slowly formed over eons of time, even as dinosaurs roamed the earth!
The caverns stay a pleasant 54° F year-round – a jacket or sweater is recommended. The tour takes place along lighted, paved walkways and steel bridges and ends with a 73-step spiral staircase (not recommended for those with serious medical conditions). Solid walking shoes recommended.
At Squire Boone Caverns, there is a 50-foot sluice in which you will be able to mine for Fool’s Gold (iron pyrite) as well as many other gems and rocks. You might discover amethyst, citrine, quartz crystal, rose quartz and more! Take home what you find as is or have your stones put into one of our many different settings.
Farm animals were an essential part of life for Squire Boone’s family. They provided meat, milk, wool, lard, and manure for fertilizer. Animal fats were used to make lye soap and candles. Squire’s Barnyard is an homage to the pioneer’s life, but with one major difference: the animals have been given a home with lots of love and care.
In the early 1970s, our founder and president had a dream of opening a cave attraction for the public to enjoy. He and his brother were exploring and excavating to make the caverns accessible when they discovered human remains. This discovery led to researching the history of the land, which ultimately led to the Boone family. Working with the Boones and historians, it was determined that the remains belonged to Squire Boone, and that the surrounding area had belonged to this historical pioneer. Realizing the cultural and archival significance of their discovery, Squire Boone Caverns was born.
