Fly fishing ONLY. The unique shell sand alkaline machair lochs on the West side create good feeding and the ideal growing conditions for our quality brown trout. In contrast the middle and East coast of the Islands cultivate a smaller but sportier fish.

The best of the brown trout fishing is on the Machair Lochs on the West side of the Island. Which include lochs such as Grogarry, Stilligarry, West Ollay and Bornish. These unique lochs are based on a shell sand bottom and thus are alkaline with excellent feeding.

Ghillie Informationn

We would recommend the use of a ghillie whilst fishing the South Uist lochs due to the strong winds that blow regularly – a ghillie will master your boat and provide better control of drifts. Windy weather does however yield best fishing results. Some lochs are heavily weeded although this is important for feeding. These lochs are more productive when fished with a ghillie as they use their knowledge and experience to navigate around these weeded areas to your advantage.

Please note – Ghillies can be arranged by the Estate (a non-refundable administration charge of £15 will be applied) and are primarily available for brown trout and salmon/sea trout lochs, however there is limited availability. Ghillies are paid direct and can be an invaluable asset to you through sharing advice and experience of fishing South Uist lochs
