By mid-morning the convoy slips out of Wadi Musa and the carved sandstone of Petra recedes into ochre haze. The road hums under an air-conditioned vehicle as drivers point toward a horizon that begins to tilt into vertical: the pillar-like mountains of Wadi Rum. Within 1.5–2 hours (roughly 100–120 km) the valley opens and the desert takes over—broad washes, rippled dunes and towering sandstone that seems to lean in to watch you pass.
