By the time the group steps out at Umbwe Gate the air is cool, wet and alive—the canopy above presses close, droplets loosening from leaves like a slow applause. The Umbwe route wastes no time: a steep, mostly unbroken climb threads between ravines and massive fig and camphor trees, a direct line up Kilimanjaro’s southern shoulder toward the Southern Ice Field.
