This 10 day outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship camp explores the changing environment and how this connects to a most basic and delicious part of our lives - food! Activities include backcountry & yurt camping, hiking along forests, beaches, and alpine, berry picking and preserving, learning about salmon fishing, tidepooling, understanding ethnobotany and local edible plant uses, and having fun in the kitchen making a range of homemade foods. Throughout all this, participants learn about how different changes to the forest, beach, and marine ecosystems affect the food we eat and how our food choices affect the environment and communities around us.
Alaska’s coastal weather can change rapidly; bring moisture-wicking layers, waterproof jackets, and warm clothing.
Hydration is key during hikes and camp activities; use a refillable bottle to stay eco-friendly and hydrated.
Mosquitoes and black flies can be present—pack insect repellent and protective clothing.
Respect fragile ecosystems by minimizing camp impact and carrying out all waste.
The camp connects young adventurers to the traditional harvesting practices that Native Alaskans have followed for centuries.
The program emphasizes sustainable harvesting and Leave No Trace ethics to protect sensitive coastal ecosystems.
