Good cardiovascular fitness and confidence on steep, uneven ground; not suitable for those with serious back or heart conditions.
An intense pre-dawn climb to the small glacier of Osorno Volcano delivers sweeping views across Llanquihue Lake and an up-close glacier experience. Short in distance but steep in gain, this sunrise trek is alpine, sensory, and best done with a guide.
You meet before dawn at Teski Lodge; the car park is a smear of headlamp beams and the thin hiss of coffee. The trail takes you east and up, and as the sky lightens the silhouette of Osorno comes into focus — a clean cone carving the horizon, its small glacier catching the first pale light. For an hour the volcano throws its shadow across Llanquihue Lake, a moving dark that seems to reach for Puerto Varas and then withdraw, leaving the slopes to glow.

Arrive at Teski Lodge one hour before sunrise and plan for early pickup from Puerto Varas—timing is critical for the shadow-and-light show over Llanquihue.
Conditions change fast at 2,100 m; windproof layers and an insulated mid-layer will keep you comfortable during stops and on the ridge.
Guides supply and fit crampons if the glacier or snowfields are present—accept the gear for safe glacier travel.
Carry at least 1.5–2 liters of water and high-energy snacks—steep ascent means you'll need quick calories and steady hydration.
Osorno’s shape is relatively young in geological terms; volcanic activity and glaciation have repeatedly reshaped the slopes and the Llanquihue basin has been a travel corridor for indigenous Mapuche people and later German settlers.
Stay on designated tracks to avoid fragile volcanic soils; guides brief groups on minimizing impact and glacier crossings are done with small group sizes to reduce wear.
Rigid-soled boots give traction and ankle support on scree, snow, and glacier approaches.
Guides will provide them when conditions require; useful for safe glacier travel and steep snow slopes.
