Walk across lava flows as recent as 1954 and learn of geological history from as far back as the Great Lake Taupo eruption in AD 186 and the creation of Mt Ngauruhoe 7500 years ago.

The distance travelled is 19.4km and the highest point is 1886m. You'll climb almost 900 vertical metres from the start point at Mangatepopo and descend just over 1100 metres to our pick-up point at Ketetahi.

Begin your hike before 7am to avoid crowds and allow ample time for the full crossing.
Carry at least 2 liters of water and refill where possible to stay hydrated in the alpine sun.
Weather changes rapidly; wear moisture-wicking base layers plus windproof and waterproof outer layers.
