About

Further upstream than the suggested day trip to Pangbourne and back, but about the same distance, you will set-off just upstream of Cleeve Lock for an easy paddle downstream of approximately 10 miles and 4 locks to arrive back at Thames Canoe Hire by 5pm. Popular stop-off points along the way are Goring, for a wander into the old town and The Swan at Pangbourne. Not long after setting off from South Stoke, you will arrive at Cleeve Lock followed soon after by Goring Lock. Enjoy the lovely scenery alongside signs of the industrial revolution with Brunel’s brick built Gatehampton Railway Bridge crossing the river about a mile downstream of Goring Lock. Later, you will pass Child Beale Wildlife Park before arriving at The Swan at Pangbourne just above Whitchurch lock. Grab a bite to eat or just a drink before heading off for Mapledurham Lock, where you have Mapledurham house which you can explore if you have left enough time. Alternatively, you can stop for a picnic at Purley beach then head down past Poplar Island and Appletree Eyot just before the end of your trip at our base in Reading. However, if you want an even longer paddle why not ask for a drop-off at Wallingford Bridge?

More info

You will be met by our staff with your boat(s) and equipment at the agreed set-off point where they will give you a full safety brief prior to kitting you out and helping you on to your boat to start your trip to our base at The Boat Yard.
